2020 University of Rhode Island Rising Stars Program

I. Young Artist Division

Rules:

Classical Guitarists ages 18 and older are asked to submit a live performance video of under 10 minutes with two contrasting works. The recording can be submitted by Email  as a link to a YouTube video. The microphone and video camera must be placed between 8-10 feet directly in front of the performer.  Please announce your name and the pieces you will perform. No cuts between pieces are permitted.

*There must be a minimum of 8 participants to run the competition.

** The Jury reserves the right NOT to award a first prize if they feel none of the competitors warrant the first place designation. 

 

II. High School Division

Rules:

​Classical Guitarists ages 12-18 are asked to submit a live performance video of under 10 minutes with two contrasting works. The recording can be submitted by Email as a link to a YouTube video. The microphone and video camera must be placed between 8-10 feet directly in front of the performer.  Please announce your name and the pieces you will perform. There may be a cuts between pieces. 

*There must be a minimum of 8 participants to run the competition.

**Participants 18 years old may choose to participate in either category, but NOT both. Please write the director to specify the chosen category.

 

Prize:

I. The Young Artist winner (1) will perform and teach at the 2021 edition of the URI Guitar Festival and give a community performance at the Portsmouth Public Library.  Value: $1750 concert fee, a TourMic Pro Wireless system and LD Stinger amplifier, Augustine Strings package, and a Tonebase lifetime subscription.

2nd Prize winner will receive a full scholarship at the 2021 edition of the URI Guitar Festival, two 30 minute lessons with members of the 2020 guest artist lineup, a gift certificate from Strings By Mail, a one year subscription to Tonebase, and a string package from Augustine Strings. 

 

3rd Prize Winner will receive two 30 minute lessons with a members of the 2020 guest artist lineup, a gift certificate from Strings by Mail, a one year subscription to Tonebase, and a string package from Augustine Strings.

 

II. The High School Division winner (1) will receive a $250 cash prize, a full scholarship to study at the 2021 edition of the URI Guitar Festival (including domestic airfare) in addition to two 30 minute online lessons from members of the 2020 guest artist lineup, a lifetime subscription to Tonebase, and a string package from Augustine Strings.  

 

2nd Prize Winner will receive two online lessons from members of the 2020 guest artist lineup, and a one year subscription to Tonebase.

 

3rd Prize Winner will receive one online lesson from members of the 2020 guest artist lineup, and a one year subscription to Tonebase.

SPECIAL GUITAR PRIZE: The student who the judging panel decides is in most need of a new instrument based on their ability will receive a Kenny Hill Player Series Guitar valued at $2400.

 

 

Jury Panel

5 URI Guitar Festival Guest Artists, EXCLUDING Artistic Director, Adam Levin. 

President of Jury: Scott Borg

Registration Fee: $45

Submission Deadline: September 15, 2020, midnight

Results: September 27, 2020 at URI Guitar Festival Final Performance. Artistic Director, Adam Levin, will announce the winners via Facebook Livestream and via email.

 

*All proceeds from the Rising Stars Competition will fund scholarships for guitar student participation in the 2020 URI Guitar Festival.
